The importance of seeing a general dentist on a regular basis

Below is a quick overview of how often to see a general dentist.

Generally speaking, on average

For the most part, it is recommended to see a general dentist at least twice a year or every six months. The time between appointments is just long enough that the teeth and gums can usually be restored or salvaged if they are in bad shape. Children, adults and the elderly should never go more than six months without seeing a general dentist for a cleaning and examination. However, there are a few circumstances where these guidelines change.

Special circumstances

In some cases, a general dentist may recommend more frequent appointments. Outlined below are a few examples when it is advised to see a general dentist every three months or so.

  • Elderly patients who suffer from dry mouth. Dry mouth can lead to cavities, which induces a need for preventive care, such as cleanings
  • Children who are developing their permanent teeth. General dentists like to monitor the progression of the permanent teeth to determine that they are growing in properly
  • Adolescents who are undergoing braces treatment. The teeth and gums become prone to decay during braces because oral hygiene is much harder to maintain
  • Patients who have a track record of getting gum disease or cavities. General dentists may want to perform cleanings on patients on a frequent basis to ensure that cavities or infections are kept at bay

Although the general dentist may recommend appointments more frequently, this does not necessarily mean that it will be a traditional check-up, with x-rays, examination, fluoride and cleanings. Instead, twice a year, the general dentist will perform all of those things, whereas appointments every three months or even every month will most likely just include a quick examination or cleaning.

Other things to know

While two appointments a year are typically recommended, it is important to remember that each patient varies. Everyone has their own specific needs, which will be used to dictate how often visiting a general dentist is necessary. Consulting with a general dentist is a great way to determine what is needed and how often.
